Former Mexico striker Cuauhtémoc Blanco has insisted he would have shone at a club like Manchester United if he’d been given the chance.
He’s been speaking on the Faitelson Sin Censura programme, relayed by Medio Tempo, about his career and that of Chicharito Hernández.
Hernández is currently winding down his career in his native Mexico with Chivas, after a successful period in Europe and America, playing for the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla and LA Galaxy.
His first move outside of his homeland saw him joining Manchester United for €7.5m in 2010 and was undoubtedly a success, with him managing 59 goals and 18 assists in 157 games for the club, largely playing as a substitute.
He enjoyed good goalscoring records elsewhere too, managing 39 goals in 83 games for LA Galaxy, 38 goals in 76 games for Leverkusen and 17 in 63 for West Ham.
None of those spells were as successful as his time at Manchester United, though, which established his name in Europe and made him something of a Mexican icon.
There’s plenty who are envious of that fact and it seems Blanco is one of them, insisting he could have shone in Europe too if a club like Manchester United had given him a shot.
“He has done things very well (but) if you had put me at Manchester United or Real Madrid, you’ll see if I don’t fly,” he said.
“Believe me, yes (I could have played at that level). Now that I see it, I would have loved it. I was a player who had fun but with responsibility on the field: I ran, I fought, I made sacrifices.”
