André Onana failed to regularly impress for Manchester United since joining them from Inter Milan in 2023. The goalkeeper conceded 150 goals and kept 24 clean sheets from 102 matches.
Ruben Amorim has used Altay Bayındır as first choice in the league this season even though the Red Devils signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.
The Belgian stopper is now a back-up for Bayındır, while Manchester United allowed the Cameroon international to secure a loan move to Trabzonspor earlier this month.
Last Wednesday, journalist Rémy N’Gono said the 29-year-old had lost confidence and ended up becoming a ‘sacrificial lamb’ at Manchester United. Cameroon legend Geremi has now partly echoed N’Gono’s sentiments and Le Bled Parle relay his comments.
Geremi played over 100 games for Cameroon and had spells at Real Madrid, Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United during his playing career. He says his compatriot took the right step by leaving the Premier League club.
“I think he made the right decision [to leave the club]. It’s a good thing for him because he needed to go somewhere where he could play a lot, without too much pressure. He needs the confidence that comes from playing regularly, and at his age, he needs to play,” he said.
Manchester United have won two of their five league matches and were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Grimsby Town in August. Geremi has used United’s mixed performances to defend Onana.
“He was heavily criticised when Manchester United were struggling, but honestly, when you look at the team, he wasn’t the only player who wasn’t impressive. Even now, they’re struggling this season without him. I saw them play against Manchester City, and they were still mediocre,” Geremi explained.
