Having already done some good purchasing over the summer in Italy with the arrival of Sandro Tonali, before the gambling ban, Newcastle United are at it again this January.
It appears, in light of their star signing being banned, that they are looking for more help in midfield, and Ederson, currently at Atalanta, is the man they want.
The interest from Newcastle is nothing new, as it has been brought up in the past, but now there is active movement from the Magpies, as explained by TuttoMercatoWeb.
They point out that Steve Nickson, who is in charge of scouting at the Premier League side, was present on Monday night to watch Atalanta beat Frosinone.
It’s made explicitly clear that the man he was looking at was Ederson, who would come in to improve their midfield amid the ban on Tonali and the rumours surrounding a Bruno Guimaraes exit.
Newcastle have been ‘trying to see if there was room to get’ the Brazilian in the current transfer window, with the English side ‘ready to make an important offer’ for him.
However, they have been told that he is ‘not for sale’ in January, but that could change for a summer move, ‘when a replacement can be found calmly’.
Atalanta have ‘no intention of depriving themselves’ of one of their key players, and that’s why they ‘immediately returned to sender’ the enquiry made by Newcastle, ‘without even sitting around a table’.
Back to square one for the Magpies, then.
