French winger Charles N’Zogbia, who left Aston Villa as his contract ended in June, is set to sign for Ligue 1 side FC Nantes, reports L’Equipe.

L’Equipe say the former Newcastle United player will sign a one year contract with Nantes on Wednesday.

Nantes boss René Girard was apparently very keen on signing him, despite knowing he hasn’t played since last November.

The Ligue 1 side have offered the player high wages to attract him to France, and N’Zogbia will now be hoping to revive his career. Girard was also tempted by the fact N’Zogbia can play on both sides of the attack.

The 30-year-old moved from French side Le Havre in 2004 to Newcastle United, and is set to return to France after 12 years. It’s a step backward for N’Zogbia, given Nantes are currently 18th (out of 20) in France’s Ligue 1, having finished 14th last season.

The Chronicle explained earlier this year that Sunderland were taking N’Zogbia on trial. The former Newcastle United player impressed at the club’s rivals, but didn’t end up signing a contract.

N’Zogbia made 281 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic, and Aston Villa.
