Djurgårdens IF have confirmed academy coach Fredrik Björnsby will move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Swedish club have released a statement on their official website about him joining Wolves.
‘After making an impression with his fine performances at Djurgården’s academy, Fredrik now has a new assignment in the Premier League as goalkeeper coach for Wolves’ academy,’ a statement read.
Björnsby has been the goalkeeping coach of Djurgårdens IF U16 to U19s for the past six years. A new challenge awaits him at Wolves, where he will be part of their academy.
Happy to be joining Wolves
The club’s website has also relayed comments from the coach, ahead of his move to the Premier League side.
Björnsby has expressed his happiness about joining the Wolves set-up and also insisted he couldn’t turn down this opportunity.
“I was very happy to be asked, and this will be something different as it is a Premier League club in England, where they have huge organisations,” he said.
“If you get an opportunity like this, you have to jump on the train. It’s incredibly exciting, even though it will be very challenging. So, this encompasses the whole spectrum of emotions in terms of motivation, joy and challenge.”
The Swede says he’ll have multiple roles with the English club. He will be coaching the academy players, have an important role with U16s and be an assistant coach with Wolves U18s and above.
The coach will soon start a new life in England and although it’s a “big move”, he says it’s a “bit scary”.
Djurgårdens IF academy director Joel Riddez is pleased that a coach from his side is moving to Wolves. He also explains Björnsby’s exit is a loss for the Swedish club
“This is a significant step forward for Fredrik and a feather in the cap for the academy that one of our leaders is moving to a Premier League club,” Riddez explanied.
“It is well deserved after Fredrik has done an excellent job for many years at Djurgården. Looking at the development on the goalkeeping side, it has been tremendous, and since he joined, we have produced elite goalkeepers every year.”
