Many footballers in Jordan Amavi’s position would have left Aston Villa at the end of last season with no intention of ever returning to the club. The French fullback had endured a torrid first year in English football, with an unfortunate injury coming before relegation.

Before the Villa move Amavi was considered an outside chance for France’s Euro 2016 squad, and since then his stock had plummeted. Playing in the Championship wasn’t going to change that, but the 23 year old wanted to recover his form at Aston Villa and was grateful to the club and supporters for how they’d treated him.

Speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe, Amavi was asked about an approach from Marseille during the winter transfer window, and replied: “They were interested, yes. But Aston Villa had bet on me, had always supported me during my injury. I wanted to give them that confidence.”

Amavi didn’t jump ship last summer and didn’t push for a move in the winter either, but L’Equipe wanted to know if the next window is the time to leave Aston Villa: “I don’t know. Will Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 07.54.55clubs come for me?”

Probably.

Asked if it would be a failure to stay, Amavi said: “Not at all. England is the championship which pleases me most.”

Should Aston Villa fail to produce a miracle and get promoted, then an Amavi Premier League switch may be the likeliest outcome.
