On May 11th, Calciomercato reported Tottenham Hotspur could decide against retaining Dejan Kulusevski beyond this season.
In January 2022, the forward joined Spurs from Juventus on an 18-month loan deal with an obligation to buy if certain set conditions are met. Among them was qualifying for the Champions League, which they haven’t achieved for next season.
Tottenham also have an option to buy the Sweden international for €35m. Tutto Juve interviewed TV4 journalist Sebastian Pearson to find out if the 23-year-old has a future at the north London club.
“I don’t have any new information, but I think it’s all part of a very specific Tottenham strategy. I think Spurs want to keep Kulusevski, but at the same time take advantage of Juve’s need for money. And so, they’re trying to lower the price. I think [in the] end, he will stay in London,” he said.
In other words, the English club are trying to make Kulusevski’s loan stay permanent for less than €35m.
The journalist believes Tottenham would make a mistake if they were to not retain the player in the summer.
“Yes [a mistake], in the most absolute way. The Swede showed last spring that he’s a good player in the Premier League and was decisive with his plays. Furthermore, he wouldn’t be such a costly signing for Tottenham,” Pearson explained.
“I think he is a much more mature player now than the one who went away. He has gained more experience in England, has had good and bad times and has been a bit erratic in terms of performances. He needs to find continuity in his plays.”
Tottenham have one game left this season and will soon have to make a decision on the Swede’s future.
