When the Monchi to Aston Villa case first started, we pointed out there was likely to be drama on the way.
The transfer guru is said to have been keen on another exit from Sevilla, feeling for the second time that his spell with the club had come to a natural end.
Monchi has a relatively low release clause, and Sevilla were willing to give this up if he was leaving them to take a break from football. However, it was made clear they weren’t ready to do so if he was set to join another club.
There were already suspicions that he could be off to Aston Villa, even before he requested an exit. Part of the Sevilla stance is that they simply have to collect the clause to be fair to shareholders.
Monchi obviously doesn’t buy that and believes he has enough history with the club to be able to decide his future in complete freedom.
They don’t think things went well, saying he looked angry when leaving after just 15 minutes, and that he ‘stepped on the accelerator of his BMW’ to speed off. Relationships appeared to have become strained, at the very least, and this may now be more about Monchi and Sevilla than Aston Villa.
Earlier claims from Spain stated the Premier League club don’t want to pay the clause, yet it would be clear that even if they are willing… Monchi doesn’t feel like they should have to.
In a fresh article, Estadio say Aston Villa have offered around €2m for Monchi, which they state is ‘significantly less than half’ of his clause.
