Former Everton manager Rafa Benitez seems to be facing some of his old problems at Celta Vigo.
Spanish outlet AS doesn’t go easy on him today, as they feature a story claiming the La Liga side are ‘losing their DNA’ with him in charge.
Celta Vigo had a reputation of being one of the clubs in Europe’s top tiers to use the most academy players, and that has been changing since Benitez took the job.
It’s said the number of home-grown players in the lineup is ‘on the brink of disappearance’, as only one athlete from their academy was in his last starting eleven.
That isn’t something new for Benitez, as the manager faced similar criticism when at Everton.
Reports from a couple of years ago recall that the coach had been questioned by the English media about the lack of youngsters in the Toffees’ line-up, and he defended himself against that at the time.
“We used to have the same problem every year, not just here but in every country and every club when we talk about young players. It seems that to be young is to be good enough”, he said back then, quoted by Liverpool Echo.
Benitez left Everton in January 2022, and it took a while for him to take a new job, as he only signed for Celta Vigo in the summer.
