The stories coming from Spain in the run up to Celtic’s second leg against Valencia in the Europa League continue to be negative.

Fans have complained of heavy handed tactics from the police, and some have video to back up their statements, and there’s been trouble in Benidorm, Valencia and also on a train travelling from Madrid.

The police approach was predicted to non confrontational, in contrast to what often happens in Spain, given the expectation was of a good natured environment.

For whatever reason or reasons, that’s changed.

Super Deporte and La Vanguardia report six Celtic fans have been arrested and detained ahead of the match. Five of those were arrested for ‘assaulting police officers’, with it stated people were throwing ‘bottles, glasses and chairs’.

The final fan was arrested for ‘drug trafficking’ whilst travelling to Valencia by train.

Several police officers are said to have been injured, and a passer-by was hit by a bottle. The door of a police van was also damaged.

Brendan Rodgers’ men face a 2-0 deficit against Valencia tonight.
