Celta Vigo have opened up a place in their squad, allowing them to press ahead with an effort to re-sign Fer López from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That’s according to AS. They report that the Spanish side have opened up a spot in their 25-man squad by sending Damián Rodríguez to Racing Santander.

That loan is set to be finalised imminently. And when it is, it will allow the Sky Blues to make a signing. The man they want is Fer López, who has been sorely missed since he joined Wolves in the summer. In fact, the newspaper label him as the ‘prodigal son’.

All the parties involved, except for Wolves, have publically expressed their enthusiasm for the midfielder to return to his hometown. Only an agreement with Wolves is needed.

They’re yet to open the door but are expected to do so ‘in a matter of days’. They’ll be happy to let Fer López depart once they get through a busy schedule that will see them take on Everton in the Premier League and then the FA Cup against Shrewsbury. After that, they don’t play until the 18th.

Although Fer López barely features under Rob Edwards, he still needs him in the squad. It’s somewhat ironic that he has too few players while Celta Vigo have too many. The latter need to get Rodríguez out of the door before they can then bring López back.

The path is clearing, though, and the long gestating return could finally be about to happen.
