When Southampton signed Pierre Emile Højbjerg from Bayern Munich, it was seen around Europe as an impressive transfer, and perhaps a surprise that the German had let the 21 year old go.

Already making 10 appearances for Southampton since the beginning of the season, Højbjerg is quickly settling in and it’s encouraging to imagine what his level will be a few years from now.

Despite his young age, Højbjerg is an experienced Denmark international and also managed, somehow, to pack in an extensive Danish youth career before making his senior debut at the age of 18.

Speaking to Denmark’s Tipsbladet ahead of the match against Poland, Højbjerg was asked to talk about his former Bayern Munich teammate Robert Lewandowski.

“I have one word: World class (which is one word in Danish:Verdensklasse). Very, very focused and very, very aware. Very explosive and super strong, so there is something to watch for. But again, he has an entire nation on his shoulders, he also has pressure.

“It is perhaps the best opponent and the most difficult fight. It’s a big test, but we must show what we can do. We need to read our opponent well and analyse the game, and then we see what we can do well.”

Højbjerg will continue to build his experience on the international stage, and that can only be a good thing for Southampton… as long as he doesn’t get injured!
