Over the January transfer window, Southampton put a lot of work into trying to improve their squad for Nathan Jones.
The manager wanted a few players, and he got some of them, but never managed to acquire Morton Hjulmand, for whom the Saints bid €11m.
The offer from Southampton was turned down by Lecce, who didn’t want to part ways with their star midway through the season, and were told to essentially come back in the summer.
On top of that, it was said that €20m would be needed, although that could go down a bit in the summer, when they would have more time to replace him.
That’s what Corriere dello Sport hint at on Tuesday, as they explain that Roma are also keen on the Dane, seemingly set to provide competition to Southampton if they stay up in the Premier League and return for Hjulmand.
Bought for €170k from Admira Wacker in Austria, the defensive midfielder, according to his club, is now ‘worth 100x more’, between €15-20m.
It’s seen as a ‘masterpiece operation’ for the club, as his sale could ‘finance the entire future transfer campaign’ of the club.
Southampton know what they have to do to get him, but they first have to avoid relegation as well as find themselves a new manager.
