According to a claim in the Croatian media, Southampton are showing interest in HNK Hajduk Split defender Branimir Mlačić.

With just days left of the January transfer window the Saints are looking to carry out some last-minute business.

Dalmatinski Portal report on Southampton’s pursuit for the 18-year-old central defender. They say an offer from the Championship side has been tabled, but they should expect to face competition.

Inter Milan, Udinese, AS Roma, and Club Brugge have also taken a keen interest in the Croatia U21 international.

Inter were the first to make a move for Mlačić and are currently leading the race to sign him. The Serie A club have offered a transfer fee in the region of €5m.

Southampton will have decision soon

However, Southampton, along with the other three clubs have offered close to this. The next couple of days are expected to be crucial to whether he joins a new club.

His family and agent will now discuss the offers which have come in for the youngster. A decision will then be made if he desires a transfer or remains at Hajduk Split.

Mlačić came from the Hajduk Split youth system and made his debut for the senior team this season. He’s gone on to make five league appearances for the Croatian club.

In September he was called up to the Croatia U21 national squad for the first time. Previous to that he represented his country at U18 and U19 level.
