Despite Southampton’s 2-1 loss to Hull City on Sunday, right-back Cedric Soares spent the day in Portugal. The player visited a charity organisation called Associação Novo Futuro (New Future Association) to help to raise funds.
Besides the many autographs, the player also spent time talking to journalists, who asked him about the national team and his former club Sporting.
“We’ll be in the World Cup, we all have this goal! Unfortunately, I can’t be in this game, but I’m sure my teammates will get it sorted the best way possible,” said the player, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury and hasn’t played for the national team since the Euros.
On Sporting’s struggle in finding last year’s form, Cedric said: “They have an excellent team, they lost some players and it’s normal that there’s a process of adaptation, but they’ll show they have a great team.”
The 25-year-old, who moved to the Saints in 2015 for €5.5m, grew up in Sporting’s academy and still mentions the Lions as ‘his’ club.
This injury has also been an issue for Cedric at Southampton, where he’s missed the club’s last seven games. He’s now expected to be recovered after the international break, when the Saints will face Liverpool on November 19th at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Questioned about José Mourinho’s Manchester United, the player didn’t want to put them out of the title race: “United have many new players who are in a continuous adaptation at the club, but they have an excellent team and will show this during the league. It’s hard to say they’re not title candidates so early, because great teams drop points every week.”
