Southampton sent scouts to watch FC Porto clinch the title against Alverca, but their recruitment thinking remains tied to one key uncertainty.

Their trip was confirmed by local outlets A Bola and Record. And while promotion is not secured yet, the club are heading into the Championship play-offs. That leaves two very different squad plans on the table.

That context probably shaped what they were likely looking for at the Dragão.

Two scenarios shaping Southampton’s shortlist

If Southampton return to the Premier League, their targets from this match become more ambitious.

Alberto Costa fits that bracket. The 22-year-old right-back delivered a crucial late intervention, clearing a shot off the line, and showed his ability to cover ground in both phases. His profile suggests readiness for a higher level, while still offering room to develop.

Alan Varela also falls into that category. Introduced in the second half, he showed composure in possession and positional discipline. Southampton would need midfield control at Premier League level, and Varela’s style suits that demand.

And if we’re talking energy and physicality, an obvious choice would be left-back Zaidu Sanusi, who already is a Leeds United target.

Rodrigo Mora is the more ambitious name on the list. His cameo showed quality, but a move would likely depend on Southampton securing promotion and being willing to stretch financially.

Championship plan remains very different

If Southampton fail to go up, the focus shifts immediately.

In that case, Alverca’s Chiquinho and Porto’s Pablo Rosario become more realistic targets in that scenario. Both offer experience and physical presence, attributes that are crucial in the Championship. Chiquinho’s direct running and Rosario’s midfield control would suit the demands of that league.

Alverca’s Davy Gui, despite limited minutes, made a strong impression. The 19-year-old recorded 15 actions in just 12 minutes, bringing urgency and unpredictability. That type of profile could be developed further in a more structured environment.

Lincoln adds another option. His work rate for the visiting side and ability to contribute defensively and offensively would translate well to a higher tempo league.

Porto’s young right-back Martim Fernandes could also be considered as a depth option, particularly given his composure in possession and potential for development.

Wider context from the match

Beyond the specific shortlist, several players on the pitch would have been noted.

Diogo Costa made key saves to preserve the result and continues to attract attention across Europe. Gabri Veiga assisted the winning goal and dictated attacking phases, reinforcing his reputation.

Also, one familiar name for the Saints led the celebrations. Jan Bednarek scored the goal that sealed Porto’s title, crowning a brilliant season for the defender. However, a move back to Southampton does not appear to be on the agenda.

What happens next

Southampton’s recruitment team face a split path. Promotion opens the door to players like Alberto Costa and Rodrigo Mora. Failure to go up pushes the focus towards more pragmatic additions such as Chiquinho and Pablo Rosario.

That uncertainty explains their broad scouting approach in Portugal. Rather than targeting one profile, they are building two parallel plans. The outcome of the play-offs will decide which one becomes reality.
