Southampton’s promotion to the Premier League means they are now realistically in a battle with Newcastle and Aston Villa for Juventus’ Matias Soulé.

That’s according to Corriere Torino, who put Southampton in the mix for Soulé today as Juventus plan a summer of sales to balance the books.

Southampton secured their immediate return to the Premier League over the weekend with a 1-0 win over Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley.

The Saints are expected to have a busy summer as a result, with many accepting that they will need to heavily strengthen Russel Martin’s squad if they are to avoid relegation next season.

That puts them in the mix for Soulé, with the newspaper reporting that the youngster is being ‘specially observed’ by a growing list of Premier League clubs, including Southampton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Juventus value the Argentine at €30-35m so it remains to be seen whether any of those sides would be willing or able to pay such a fee. We’d certainly suggest Newcastle and Aston Villa would be more capable than Southampton at this point.

The Saints, though, do have a relationship with Juventus thanks to the deal for Carlos Alcaraz in January, so perhaps they could use that to their advantage.

At this point it seems they’re just watching the player, with their return to the Premier League meaning they’re firmly in the battle.
