Last month, Kicker reported Hamburg have initiated contact to sign Southampton’s Damion Downs in the winter market. Since then, other outlets have covered their interest.
On Monday, we covered claims from Germany that Werder Bremen are in talks to sign the striker on loan.
Bild now report Hamburg have won the race to sign the 21-year-old from Southampton.
The Saints invested €8m to buy him from 1. FC Köln last summer. He struggled to shine, and the frontman has failed to score for the Championship side. That hasn’t stopped him from receiving offers, especially from Germany.
Hamburg have won the race to sign the player on loan with an option to buy set at €10m. Bild explain their sporting director, Claus Costa and manager, Merlin Polzin, convinced Downs to pick them over other clubs.
The Southampton player has already arrived in Hamburg, and his medical is scheduled for today.
Bild aren’t sure whether he can train with his new teammates today. This clearly shows the operation is at an advanced stage.
Sky Deutschland also report Hamburg have beaten Werder Bremen in the race to sign the attacker.
They have reached an agreement with Southampton to secure Downs’ services on loan with a purchase option. Sky claim the Saints man is already in Germany and will carry out medical tests with Hamburg on Tuesday.
