Southampton defender Yukinari Sugawara has quickly become a ‘lucky strike’ for Werder Bremen, who seem likely to make his loan deal a permanent one next summer.
BILD cover the situation today and explain that Sugawara has quickly settled in to life at the German club after arriving on loan from Southampton in summer.
He’s only played two games to date but has shown in why Werder signed him this summer. That deal itself only came about with a bit of lucky anyway.
They had been following him since his time at Alkmaar in the Netherlands, but it wasn’t until a move to Serie A fell through this summer that he suddenly appeared on the radar for them. They pounced and haven’t regretted doing so thus far.
Sugawara has had no problems adjusting and that’s been evident on the pitch. In the 3-3 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, he repeatedly joined the attack but then played a part in Werder’s first clean sheet of the season in the 4-0 win over Gladbach in their second game.
The German club very much believe he is a ‘lucky strike’ and the odds of them turning his loan deal permanent in the summer are increasing by the day.
A report earlier this week stated Werder were ‘almost certain’ to use a clause to buy Sugawara for €6m and this latest report is further evidence of their growing confidence in the loanee from Southampton.
