Southampton defender Yukinari Sugawara has doubts that Werder Bremen can sign him permanently.
That’s according to BILD. They report that the Southampton loanee is unlikely to see his current deal made permanent.
He joined Werder on loan from Southampton in Augustand was an instant success. He made an immediate impact on the right wing and earned plenty of praise for his performances.
The defender can imagine staying. But he has doubts about whether Werder can or wants to afford him. That’s something he’s willing to openly admit.
“If we were in the top three, it would certainly be easier for the club to say, ‘We’re buying Yuki!'” he said.
The newspaper, though, knows that Werder have no intention of using their purchase option. That’s value at €6m and they’re not keen on paying it outright. Instead, they will try to negotiate a new transfer fee with Southampton.
They paid €7m to sign Sugawara in 2024 so they’re not exactly facing a major loss on him. He was signed for the Premier League, though, so presumably has a big wage packet for a side currently sat 16th in the Championship.
That’s something to be worked out. Werder Bremen aren’t going to pay either way, so negotiations are on the way at some point.
