Barcelona are once again searching for a central defender ahead of future windows. During the summer transfer window, the club came close to signing Inigo Martinez from Real Sociedad.

In the end, Barcelona were put off by the defender’s release clause of around €30m, which makes one wonder just what they’re willing to spend on a player for the position.

Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo look at the situation in their Thursday edition and believe there’s several ways Barcelona could go.

The opportunity of going for a young player is there, as it always is, but there’s also the chance to move for a well established defender, which is when Virgil van Dijk is mentioned.

Southampton refused to sell Van Dijk to Liverpool during the summer transfer, and money would surely be an issue for Barcelona.

Van Dijk would come with a Premier League premium, given that he’s proven himself at Southampton, but that’s not really what Barcelona need.

The likelier option is probably Inigo Martinez. Again.
