Towards the end of August, Southampton signed Elias Jelert from Galatasaray on loan with a purchase option.

The Turkish champions have confirmed the Saints paid €300,000 in loan fee plus a potential €250,000 as bonuses. Southampton have also secured a €8.5m purchase option and will cover the right-back’s full wages during his loan stay.

He’s made only one start for Southampton, and it came in their EFL Cup loss to Liverpool. Jelert has been limited to 11 minutes from two appearances in the Championship.

Monday’s edition of Sabah takes a look at the 22-year-old’s situation at St Mary’s.

Galatasaray took the defender from FC Copenhagen in July 2024 and were expecting him to perform well. That didn’t happen and the Denmark international ended up being a ‘disappointment last season’.

Therefore, the Istanbul club sent him on loan to Southampton, and Jelert has struggled so far.

Will Still has used summer signing Mads Roerslev and centre-back Ronnie Edwards ahead of the Dane for the right-back position.

The Saints don’t seem to be convinced of the Galatasaray man after three matches. It’s claimed Southampton don’t intend to exercise the €8.5m purchase option.

Sabah could be jumping the gun here as Jelert still has time to turn things around at Southampton.
