Dutch goalkeeper Justin Bijlow does not appear to be joining Southampton after all, following issues during his medical.

That’s according to Eindhovens Dagblad, who report that the goalkeeper has returned to Feyenoord after ‘a difference of opinions’ during a medical at Southampton.

The newspaper reports covers comments from the Feyenoord goalkeeper on a long social media post, in which he explained what had gone wrong.

“I was on my way to the Premier League,” he said.

“After a very special day last Sunday, for which I am extremely grateful, I prepared to leave Feyenoord. I didn’t find that easy and it wasn’t my first choice, but it had to be done in the interest of my career.

“The medical examination showed that Southampton has a different view than Feyenoord about the treatment of an old injury.

“I am fully fit, and this does not hinder me, but I respect the view of the Southampton medical staff. This brings me back to Rotterdam, to my club Feyenoord.”

There is no mention from Bijlow or Southamptoon about the nature of the injury or what injury it might be that the Saints found problematic.

He’s had plenty in his career to date, with knee injuries, foot injuries, elbow injuries, thigh problems, a toe injury, a calf injury and a wrist fracture all on his medical record.

The most significant of those was foot surgery which saw him miss 721 days and 16 games for club and country in 2021/22, while his wrist fracture saw him miss 27 games in total and a calf injury last season 16 games for both.

It could be any of those that they’ve disagreed with, and it seems his move to Southampton is now completely off, having looked 100% done beforehand.
