Leaving Torino when his contract expired at the end of June, Andrea Belotti has been a free agent since then.
Many expected him to find a club rather quickly, but that hasn’t happened to date, as he waits for AS Roma to make room for him.
That left the door open for other clubs to give it a go, among which can be found Southampton, still trying to find themselves a new striker.
The Saints relied heavily on Armando Broja last season, but the Albania international has since returned to Chelsea.
Southampton’s signing of Sekou Mara, while promising, isn’t exactly a like for like replacement, while Belotti certainly would be.
That’s why it isn’t surprising to see Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side mentioned as one of those to have tried to bring the Italian to the Premier League following claims that Wolverhampton also gave it a go.
The information comes from Corriere dello Sport, who make it clear that Belotti ‘waits for Roma’, despite advances from Galatasaray and Nice (where he would have earned more).
Then come the clubs from the Premier League who ‘came forward’, which is when Wolves and Southampton are mentioned.
It was worth a shot, but it seems the Saints will need to look elsewhere to get more goals this season.
