Marseille have been trying to sell Duje Caleta-Car to a Premier League club for over a year, with the Croatian standing firm and insisting he’d only move to a club he wanted and would only go when the time felt right.
In recent days it’s been increasingly clear that the time has come, and earlier on Thursday we covered reports the Croatian international had flown to England given there was interest from West Ham United and Southampton.
L’Equipe now report that it’s the Saints who have come out on top and the central defender is on the verge of signing for the club in a deadline deal.
When it comes to the transfer fee Southampton will be sending to Marseille for Caleta-Car, there’s no figure shared but L’Equipe say they’ve been told it’s ‘modest’.
Agreement was reached between the two clubs on Thursday, and Marseille will be saving around €350k a month on the player’s wages. Those high wages are one of the reasons they were so keen on an exit.
