Newcastle United goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has been on loan at Sevilla since August 2025.
The Germany-born Greece international joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest in July 2024, after making seven appearances at the City Ground. His situation worsened at St James’ Park as he played one match for Newcastle United.
This would have convinced Vlachodimos to leave Eddie Howe’s side for Sevilla. He initially sat on the bench at the La Liga side as manager Matías Almeyda had favoured Ørjan Nyland.
The Newcastle United owned player made his Sevilla debut on September 20th. Since then, he’s played every minute in the league, keeping four clean sheets and conceding 33 goals from 22 matches.
On December 1st, the stopper said he’s happy in Spain but refused to discuss his future. Later that month, the 31-year-old dropped a hint he could stay extend his stay at Sevilla beyond this season.
Newcastle United future needs clarifying
The Andalusian club haven’t agreed a purchase clause with Newcastle United, meaning he will have to return to St James’ Park after this season.
Vlachodimos’ contract at the Tyneside club expires in 2028 but is unlikely to have a future there after this season. Therefore, he and Newcastle United would have to find a solution in the summer.
The La Liga side face Real Betis in the derby on Sunday and ahead of this clash, ABC Sevilla on Wednesday have a piece on the Magpies man.
The newspaper first focus on his performances and then relay quotes from two former goalkeepers. Towards the end, there’s a subsection, titled: ‘With his future up in the air’.
Why he’s open to Sevilla stay
Vlachodimos recently posted a video of his kids singing the Spanish club’s anthem. Sevilla then shared it on their official YouTube channel. This is seen as Vlachodimos’ latest hint of wanting to stay beyond this season.
The goalkeeper is enjoying life, both on and off the pitch, after a disappointing spell at Newcastle United. Those close to the Greek have informed the newspaper he’s ‘very happy right now’ and is open to extending his stay.
Seville is a great place for footballers to live, and the city is often a beneficial pull for Los Nervionenses and rivals Real Betis.
However, Sevilla going through serious financial difficulties, which makes it complicated to convince the Premier League side. They’re hard enough to deal with at the best of times, pleading poverty to secure lower fees and deals.
Now, those pleas are genuinely backed up by a financial mess off the pitch. There’s also an ongoing ownership battle, with competing camps and bidders.
Therefore, whilst Vlachodimos is very happy, it’s unlikely Newcastle United would be able to get the best financial deal from Sevilla. The goalkeeper has seriously impressed in La Liga, and selling elsewhere in Spain may be the best plan.
