Sory Kaba had a spell on loan at Cardiff City in 2023, and could have moved to Middlesbrough, Birmingham City or Watford after that.
Despite his time in Wales only being short, the 30-year-old looks back on it fondly. His major memory is Cardiff City fans and how well they support the club.
Now playing for OH Leuven in the Belgian Pro League, Kaba has been speaking to the media about his career so far. That’s when Cardiff City, Middlesbrough, Watford and Birmingham City came into the conversation.
Belgian newspaper DH quote the striker as saying: “The UK, even the Championship, is my dream. I arrived on loan at the end of January 2023. The passion for football there is insane! It’s one of the places where I’ve been happiest.
“On a Wednesday, you can play three hours from Cardiff, and you have 3,000 fans traveling to see you. At home, every match is an event. The style suits me well; I scored eight goals in 17 matches. Birmingham City, Watford, and Middlesbrough all wanted me. But I was drawn to Las Palmas… My wife is Spanish, and I played in every division there except La Liga.”
Championship return not out of the question
Kaba and his family didn’t get to spend much time at Las Palmas, before the exit rumours started again. In July 2024, he was linked with a return to Cardiff City, with West Brom and Sheffield United also keen at the same time.
Instead, Spain beat the Championship again and he moved to Elche on loan, before his permanent move to Belgium earlier this year. In 12 matches this season he’s scored six goals and added an assist.
Sory Kaba’s contract expires in June, but Leuven have the option to extend for a further season. At 30-years-of-age, a return to the Championship remains a possibility.
