Of all the people one may expect to speak to Marca ahead of Tottenham versus Real Madrid, Hugo Lloris’ father doesn’t rank high on the list of likely candidates.
Nevertheless, the Spanish newspaper reached out to Lloris senior, who was happy to share his pride in the Spurs and France captain.
The goalkeeper’s childhood love of tennis, and ability in the game, is often covered, and Luc Lloris believes it’s directly benefitted the Tottenham stopper’s game: “That speed of hands and head is typical of tennis players and also goalkeepers. My son is very hardworking, very applied, demanding of himself, and that is his secret.”
Lloris junior doesn’t let out many other secrets, with the goalkeeper not into using agents, a situation which has been the same through his career, Luc explained to Marca: “He’s had great coaches in his training, but he was a normal guy. He was going to train from school. Let’s say that since childhood he has liked to take care of his own affairs. I advise him, but he talks to the clubs and manages his business.”
The Spanish newspaper note a pride through the words of Lloris senior, who is clearly happy with his son as a man, aside from football achievements.
Quizzed on previous doubts in France, now all gone, about Lloris’ captaincy style and being a quiet leader, the player’s father explained: “Hugo doesn’t hide, when he doesn’t like something, he will talk to anyone. When he has had problems with a club, he has gone to the president’s office or has gone to talk to the coach if he didn’t agree on something. If he is captain of France and Tottenham, he has qualities, right? Fortunately, that debate is history.”
Perhaps watching his son take on Real Madrid at Wembley tonight, as Tottenham captain, will be yet another reason for Luc Lloris to rightly feel proud.
