On July 19th, Alexandre Mendy announced to the world that he’s decided to join Sunderland.

In a move which made him a cult-hero-in-waiting, he said he’d watched every series of Sunderland ‘Til I Die and that had helped swing his mind towards the Black Cats.

He had the chance to go to Saudi Arabia and make much more money, but Mendy wanted to leave Caen for one club only… Sunderland.

The Championship side now have to contend with Caen, who appear to be being a little awkward over the potential transfer.

Mendy scored 23 goals in 39 matches for Caen last season, but they finished 6th and therefore remain in Ligue 2. The French club will let him leave but only on their terms.

The 30-year-old didn’t go on Caen’s pre-season trip to Switzerland and is training alone in Normandy.

La Pays d’Auge quote Caen manager Nicolas Seube as saying: “The situation is a little delicate. There are real requests, but they are not yet up to what the club hopes for. The issue is economic. It can be long and annoying for everyone, the technical staff, the player and the structure as a whole.”

“I hope that when we return [from training], either an arrangement will have been found, or Alex will be able to rejoin the group. It’s also for his own good too.”

Caen are surely under pressure to sell here and Sunderland should be able to get a deal done.
