Bayern Munich’s interest in Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon is serious and could help them to further challenge the ‘farmer’s league’ narrative around the Bundesliga.

Abendzeitung Munich report on the potential transfer today and how, if it goes through, it would be the latest Bayern transfer to challenge the long-established narrative.

Bayern Munich interest growing

The newspaper reports that Anthony Gordon’s performances for Newcastle United this season have earned Bayern’s interest.

The 25-year-old has been directly involved in 22 goals in46 games and is very much the ‘linchpin’ of Newcastle’s attack. He’s particularly impressed in the Champions League, with only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé having been more successful.

That’s attracted top clubs like Bayern. AZ confirm, after various other reports in England and Germany, that Bayern are ‘seriously considering’ the Newcastle star.

They value Gordon’s versatility as he can play across the front three. But there’s also the marketing element to it.

Farmer’s league no more

As far as the newspaper is concerned, signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United would demonstrate how attractive Bayern Munich has become for ‘top international players’.

The Bundesliga would also benefit in terms of marketing. That’s often been derided as a ‘Farmer’s League’, but Gordon’s arrival would add to a growing feeling that isn’t the case.

Bayern have already plucked Harry Kane and Michael Olise from the Premier League. He’d be the third arrival, and proof that the Bundesliga can compete for the top names. Both players have hit greater heights in Munich since their moves, and Gordon could do the same.

The same can be said of Luis Diaz. He swapped Premier League champions Liverpool for Bayern last summer and hasn’t looked back since. Top players are attracted to the Bundesliga and Gordon would be the latest to make the switch.

The question is what price Bayern want to pay. Reports have Newcastle’s asking price at £75m. That’s a top figure for the 25-year-old, who, despite good numbers, has often flattered to deceive.

But the German champions may consider it a price worth paying. There are, according to AZ, plenty of extra benefits to the move.
