Girona’s announcement that they’ll be showcasing Manchester City’s recent trophies is obviously not going down very well in Spain.
The club who are part of the City Group may share a strong bond, but fans and press are now questioning why they would want to exhibit each other’s achievements.
The latest comments on this subject are made by Cope pundit Tomas Guasch. Responding to the many fans who’ve been writing on social media how ridiculous it is, he points out that Manchester City and Girona may still face each other in the near future, and that will be an even stranger situation.
Guasch first claimed that showcasing other club’s trophies are like “showing off the grandmother’s jewels”.
“Very convenient that they play each other in the Champions League and we experience an apotheosis Girona-City tie with Ceferin taking the ceremonial kick-off.
“The novelty would have been that they would have exhibited Real Madrid’s 14 European Cups, perhaps in time”
Girona will be showing Manchester City’s treble in a fan zone later this month. The English club recently made a tour with their trophies, visiting many countries where they’re clearly trying to expand their brand. Now this campaign with the La Liga side is what is generating controversy.
The Spanish club fans want their own club to win big trophies, and watching Pep Guardiola’s achievements will surely not be enough.
