With Kevin de Bruyne set to leave Manchester City in the summer, the prospect of him joining Liverpool is suddenly being taken very seriously, at least in Belgium.
That’s at least if the latest from De Standaard is anything to go by, as they provide plenty of reasons why it could make sense.
De Bruyne announced his decision to leave Manchester City at the end of the season earlier this month and has since reminded everyone of his enduring quality with a shining display in the win over Crystal Palace.
That’s led to assurances that he’s not ready to step down from the European elite just yet, and it was even suggested on Tuesday that he should seriously consider joining Liverpool.
Well, De Standaard insist that De Bruyne is ‘not ready for the desert yet’, suggesting a move to Saudi Arabia is not on the cards.
They explain that De Bruyne would instead prefer to remain playing ‘at the highest level’, hence his recent comments that he won’t rule out a move to another Premier League club
“It could be possible,” he told Viaplay after his performance against Palace.
“It is very difficult to say at the moment. The decision to leave City has only just been made. It’s only been a week, and I haven’t even seen my family again. We’ll see.”
They say the possibility of him playing for Manchester United or Liverpool has ‘come as a surprise’ in England but the latter are actually his grandfather’s favourite team. Thus, there could be a sentimental logic in joining Manchester City’s rivals.
There is also the fact he’ll take his family into consideration. He wants to ensure his wife, and three children can ‘find their way in a new environment’. That wouldn’t be needed if he were to move to Merseyside as they could remain living in Manchester, where they’ve been for 10 years.
A move to Liverpool would also allow De Bruyne to stay playing at the top of the game. He has a ‘hunger’ to do so after overcoming his injury problems. In fact, that hunger has been ‘sharpened’.
Of course, it would be a sensational move to say the least but there are factors speaking for it as far as they’re concerned in Belgium.
