Mateu Alemany’s exit from Barcelona has been officially announced by the club. The transfer guru is set to leave at the end of June, although he’ll continue to help the Blaugrana with transfer business that was started before that time.
He’s also assisting with various important contract renewals, given those negotiations have been managed by him for months.
Alemany is expected to move to Aston Villa as part of the club’s big project to push for Champions League football. Teaming up with manager Unai Emery, the pairing has been seen as something of a dream.
In Barcelona, the media have been hugely flattering towards Alemany, accepting that he has his reasons to leave the Camp Nou. They haven’t even criticised him for chasing the Premier League money at Aston Villa.
However, Catalan newspaper Sport have just dropped a bombshell. On Wednesday lunchtime they’ve published an article which states Alemany reconsiders his position and offers to continue at Barcelona, thus dumping the Aston Villa opportunity.
He met with club president Joan Laporta on Wednesday and offered to carry on, with Sport saying he wanted to ‘convey his willingness to continue leading the culé sports project’.
Obviously this will be a developing story.
