Former Sheffield Wednesday attacker Bentio Carbone has told the Italian media he made a mistake leaving Inter Milan. The Italian signed for Sheffield Wednesday in 1996 after just one season at the San Siro.

TMW have reported on comments the Ternana coach made in which he said he was having problems with Inter Milan coach Roy Hodgson because he was being played on the wing rather than down the middle. Carbone believes No.10 was his best position so he had it out with Hodgson at the end of the season.

Carbone was told he would still play on the wing because of the competition for places, and therefore he requested an exit. However, Carbone thinks leaving the Serie A side was one of the worst decisions of his career.

“I was fine, but there were misunderstandings with Mr. Hodgson: I was a starter, yes, but he wanted me to play on the wing, while I felt more of a playmaker. At the end of the season I had a conversation with the coach and I explicitly asked to play as a second striker.

“He replied in that role he had several alternatives and would also purchase Djorkaeff. At that point I decided to go elsewhere. In retrospect, it was one of the worst choices of my career,” said the former Sheffield Wednesday star.

Carbone spent 3 seasons at Sheffield Wednesday making nearly 100 league appearances, scoring 25 goals. In 1999 he signed for Aston Villa before spells at Bradford City, Derby County and Middlesbrough.
