Ben Brereton Diaz moved to Villarreal from Blackburn Rovers in the summer 2023 transfer window. He’d arrived as a free agent and there was a lot of hope attached to the move.
The striker’s exploits with Chile saw his star rise and Villarreal thought they were getting a bargain, with the Spanish club likely planning for a big profit down the road.
However, the 25-year-old made 14 appearances in La Liga without scoring, and was sent on loan to Sheffield United in the winter window.
His 14 games in the Premier League provided a much better return than what he’d got in Spain, with six goals and one assist for Sheffield United.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to stop the Blades from being relegated to the Championship.
Brereton Diaz is now set to return to Villarreal, and he’s not thought to be in the plans there. El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Spanish club’s local newspaper, say a sale is being considered.
Villarreal ‘would listen to offers’ around €7-10m for the player, and there’s no indication of whether Sheffield United would consider that.
