Xherdan Shaqiri has been an emotional guy this summer. The Stoke City superstar has clearly felt a little undervalued by his country.
Having spoken out already before the tournament, Shaqiri shared his complaints again during Euro 2016, and he feels he was too quickly overlooked for one of Switzerland’s captaincy roles.
Not only that, Shaqiri was a little annoyed nobody from the Swiss football association had contacted him over Kosovo’s acceptance by FIFA.
Shaqiri is one of a number of players who could in theory swap allegiance, and he was surprised that nobody contacted him to persuade a Switzerland stay.
Against Poland, Shaqiri showed the best of his talent with a sublime goal, which has been a welcome distraction to the country’s exit from the tournament. The media there have been comparing the strike to the famous goal of Marco van Basten.
Hitzfeld says that Shaqiri has been able to ‘stabalise’ at Stoke but will ‘sooner or later’ move to a truly top club.
Stoke City made a big investment when they took Shaqiri from Inter Milan, and will hope that they can get a season of him consistently at his best before he considers moving on. He’d like have to produce that for truly top clubs to be interested.
