Brentford midfielder Sergi Canós has urged the club to release him this summer, insisting there will be issues if they extend his contract by another year.
The Spaniard has been speaking in Spain, relayed by Onda Cero, about his plans for the future and whether he would like to continue with the Bees moving forwards.
He’s been with them since a €2.9m move from Norwich in January 2017, making 249 appearances for the club in that time.
He’s currently spending the second half of this season on loan with Olympiacos, having fallen out of favour at Brentford and sought a loan move away at the end of the January transfer window as a result.
At the moment Canós is set to leave Brentford on a free in the summer when his current contract comes to an end, although the club have an option to extend him by another year.
That is something he absolutely does not want, though, insisting that he thinks it would be better for all parties if they were to simply part ways.
“I would like them to set me free, to be honest,” he said.
“I think I’ve given a lot to Brentford; Brentford have given a lot to me and for a million or two they can get for me… I think this relationship should end here in a nice way.
“If they exercise the +1 there will be a problem, because surely the teams I want to go to won’t agree with them. That already happened at Christmas.
“I understand that this is a business, if they think this is the way to proceed… then let them do it.”
