Italian outlet Calciomercato today features a very long interview with Columbus 2 midfielder Marco Micaletto, who spent some time at Brentford FC when he was a teenager.
Now at 26, the player won the MLS Next Pro, a second-tier competition in North America, which is now the biggest achievement of his career.
In the conversation with Calciomercato, Micaletto opened up about his years at Brentford, claiming that despite learning something at the club, he was actually relieved when leaving them.
“Now we know it as a good Premier League club, but then it was a team in difficulty, going between third and fourth divisions,” Micaletto told Calcio Mercato.
“There was training every day, my parents were forced to drive two hours to take me to the sports centre. Nice yes, but too serious.”
“I wanted to be a player, true. But when, at the end of the youth process, the club released me without offering me a contract, I breathed a sigh of relief. I was happy with that freedom and started auditioning up and down England.”
Despite those youth years in English football, Micaletto has only had professional contracts in the United States, where he has played for Young Harris, Charlotte, Reading United, Tormenta FC and Akron Zips until joining Columbus’ reserve squad in February this year.
In the MLS Next Pro season they just won, the midfielder had ten goals and three assists in 26 games.
Perhaps this good campaign, where he was the team captain, could draw attention from MLS clubs so he can finally have the chance to feature in the top flight in the coming years.
Or maybe a return to Brentford?
