Manchester United have made an attempt to ‘hijack’ Aston Villa’s deal for Everton’s Amadou Onana, according to Het Nieuwsblad.
Earlier this month, various reports in England and Belgium stated that the Villans have agreed a deal with Everton to sign the midfielder.
Het Nieuwsblad report Manchester United wanted to snatch the 22-year-old from Aston Villa’s clutches.
It’s claimed there was ‘serious pressure’ from Erik ten Hag’s side ‘this week’, to try to take the midfielder to Old Trafford.
Manchester United haven’t been unsuccessful in convincing the Belgium international to change their stance over moving to Aston Villa. They will play in the Champions League, something which Ten Hag’s side can’t offer next season.
Despite the Red Devils’ late attempt to snatch the Everton star, the deal to take him to Aston Villa is not in danger. In fact, Het Nieuwsblad say Onana’s transfer to Villa Park is ‘as good as complete’.
Unai Emery’s side have agreed to pay €60m to the Toffees. The report adds the former Lille man has been scheduled to undergo medical tests with Aston Villa on Sunday and his transfer should be made official on Monday.
Whether this is just a little effort from the Belgian media to inject some spice into the end of this move is unknown.
