Ruud van Nistelrooy made a ‘self-overestimation’ when he took the Leicester City job, believing he is better than he actually is.

That’s according to journalist Rene Van der Gijp, in comments relayed by Voetbal Zone, who has no sympathy for the Dutchman’s struggles at Leicester this season.

The former striker joined the Foxes as Steve Cooper’s replacement at the beginning of December on the back of a successful four game interim spell in charge at Manchester United.

While it was sunshine and roses at Old Trafford it’s been nothing but misery at Leicester as he’s managed just three wins in 20 games in all competitions to date and an average of 0.5 points per game.

They’re currently on a nine-game run of defeats to boot and it’s been 720 minutes since Leicester last scored a goal at home in the Premier League.

Monday’s defeat to Newcastle saw them become the first side in the history of the top four tiers of English football to lose eight successive home games without scoring. They haven’t scored at home since a 2-2 draw with Brighton on December 8th.

Van Nistelrooy is also only the second manager in Premier League history to lose eight straight home games in the competition, a further miserable record that is likely to see Leicester relegated at the end of the season.

Some in the Netherlands have sympathy for him but not Van der Gijp, who believes the manager is reaping the rewards of over thinking his ability.

“Ruud can’t help this. He just made the wrong choice If you can choose between no club or a bad club, then you should not take a club,” Johan Derksen said on Today Inside.

“It’s also a form of self-overestimation. To think you’ll do it. Come on, man, please…” countered Van der Gijp.

“With a bit of luck, there will be a good club. That’s why I thought it was overconfident of Mark van Bommel that he rejected NEC. With Marcel Boekhoorn at the rule you have a decent club,” conclude Derksen.
