Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida has seen another transfer option fall by the wayside this summer after Robin van Persie’s sacking at Feyenoord.
FR-Fans report information from De Telegraaf today. According to their information, Geertruida would have considered a return to his former club this summer if Van Persie had remained as manager.
Feyenoord off the table
The newspaper explains that Lutsharel Geertruida was present this week at an international football tournament of the now former Feyenoord coach.
The defender, who has spent this season on loan at Sunderland, helped the children and was present at the awards ceremony. Barely 24 hours later he was flying to the World Cup as a replacement for the injured Jurriën Timber.
According to the newspaper, Geertruida has spent time this summer already speaking to Robin van Persie about the future. That included a potential return to the Netherlands with Feyenoord.
The 25-year-old has spent this season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. But the Black Cats have already decided not to keep him long-term. And the German side would like to move him on permanently as well.
World Cup first
A return to Feyenoord, who he made 202 appearances for after coming through their youth ranks, would have been an option. However, Van Persie was sacked just a few hours after his appearance at the event. Now the option of a return is off the table.
There had also been the possibility of a move to Liverpool and a reunion with Arne Slot. But now that’s likely gone out of the window too thanks to Slot’s departure from Anfield.
The defender has to make a decision about what comes next. Sunderland don’t seem to want him permanently despite making 30 appearances for them on loan this season.
And a return to Feyenoord is now off the table. For now, his focus will be on the World Cup with the Netherlands. His last-minute call up thanks to Timber’s absence has given him the opportunity, then it’ll be time for transfer business.
