A couple of days ago, we reported Napoli’s interest in Serbian star Aleksander Mitrovic. The 22-year-old hasn’t featured as regularly as he would have liked for Newcastle United this season, as Dwight Gayle has been in impressive form.
However, Mitrovic has also been among the goals, and started in the last match against Cardiff City.
Napoli want to sign the Serbian in January, but are having second thoughts, reports Gazzetta dello Sport. The Italian newspaper say Napoli are still considering signing the Newcastle star, but are not sure if they want to sign a player who hasn’t played in Italy before.
Napoli might very well decide to sign him, but it’s unlikely Newcastle will sell him in January considering what’s at stake for the Championship club. Newcastle are currently at the top of the Championship table, and Rafael Benitez’s team are favourites to win promotion.
Whilst Newcastle can, and probably would, say no to a Napoli approach, the last thing Benitez would want is Mitrovic having his head turned by the club, so them having second thoughts is a positive.
The Italian club have several options they’re looking at, with Mitrovic, and West Ham’s Simone Zaza, among them.
Mitrovic has scored 5 goals this season in all competitions, and has another four years left on his contract.
