Unable to find himself a way into Jürgen Klopp’s plans at Anfield, Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg was loaned out to Schalke 04 for the season.

Unfortunately, a torn ankle ligament left him out of action for most of the season, but that hasn’t stopped the German side from wanting to keep him longer.

That being said, there is competition for the Dutchman, according to Bild in Germany, with Mainz 05 taking an interest in the 21-year-old.

It looked like Schalke were going to win the race, but the emergence of the other Bundesliga side could change everything, as they are currently checking the ‘financial and sporting feasibility’ of a deal with Liverpool.

Having extended his deal with the Reds until 2026, the centre-back could go out on another loan, and Mainz have ‘a need’ for a player in his position, having had to fall back on emergency solutions too many times last season during injury and form ‘crises’.

Down Liverpool’s end, the wish is that the player ‘should continue to be loaned out’, but only to a club playing in the top-tier of their country.
