Leeds United’s Maximilian Wöber has been on loan at Werder Bremen since July and the temporary move been a disaster.

The Austria international made his debut for the Bundesliga side in their 1-0 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal in August.

He suffered an injury in the same clash and Olivier Deman replaced the Leeds United man in the 79th minute.

A hamstring injury forced him to spend 111 days away from the pitch. The defender had regained full fitness in December and featured in a friendly against FC St. Pauli this year.

The 28-year-old played 45 minutes and sustained a fresh setback. He has been on the sidelines since then with a calf injury, limiting him to only one appearance this season.

In short, the centre-back, who can also operate as a left-back, is yet to feature in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen.

Wöber recently revealed his injury is more serious than he had initially thought. He also said he was hoping to play five to six league matches this season, after this month’s international break.

“Hopefully, after the international break, I’ll at least have five or six games where I can give my all for the club,” he said.

Concern over Leeds United player’s fitness

Monday’s edition of Bild relays these comments and provide their own take on the Whites defender.

The ‘personnel situation at Werder Bremen remains tense’ because of multiple long term injured players. This includes Wöber, who hasn’t featured competitively for eight months and won’t return to the pitch anytime soon.

At the start of this month, the German club’s manager, Daniel Thioune, said they won’t rush him back.

Thioune explained: “We have to be patient and give him time. Therefore, there’s no precise prognosis.”

Wöber recently travelled to London to visit a specialist, and the expectation was for him to regain fitness after the international break.

However, the Leeds United owned player won’t be fit enough to get on the pitch straight away due to lack of match practice. Therefore, Bild suggest he may not feature again for Werder Bremen again. His season could be over, and then run of matches he’s hoping for appears unrealistic.

Werder are four points above the relegation zone and it’s not clear whether Thioune would risk giving Wöber minutes.

Situation concerning for Daniel Farke’s side

Werder Bremen are unlikely to exercise the purchase option. Therefore, the Austrian will have to return to Elland Road, where he has a contract until 2027.

If Daniel Farke were to leave him out of his plans next season, Leeds United have to sell, to avoid losing him for free.

Transfermarkt value at €4m, but his injury situation could force Leeds United to sell him for less.
