Today could be a ‘decisive day’ in the ongoing illegal betting case against Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who say a meeting is scheduled today between the Newcastle man’s lawyers and the federal prosecutor of the FIGC, Giuseppe Chiné.
The newspaper explains that there will be ‘maximum confidentiality’ on the matter, specifically in terms of place and time, but there is a certainty that the Newcastle man will work on a plea bargain after he provided testimony last Sunday.
It’s stated he has decided to ‘collaborate’ on the matter, confirming that he had bet on illegal football sites and also on AC Milan matches.
A suspension is now expected after Fagioli was disqualified for seven months, with five months of rehabilitation, and the belief is that it will be handed down quickly. Tonali’s suspension could be longer, though, because he bet on his own team.
Newcastle United have offered their unconditional support but the matter is being pushed by UEFA, who are ‘in a hurry’ for a resolution to the matter and want it dealt with as quickly as possible.
They want the player, who is now labelled as a ‘self-confessed’ offender, out of the picture so he is not starring in the Champions League as Newcastle have insisted they will use him as long as he is available.
Thus, a decision could be made today as Tonali’s lawyers meet with the prosecutors to presumably work on how his plea bargain will be shaped.
