Vítor Matos left CS Marítimo to become new Swansea City manager on Monday.

The Championship side shifted focus to the 37-year-old after losing out to Middlesbrough in the race for Kim Hellberg. Last week, claims from Portugal made clear Matos was keen on joining Swansea City.

Five days ago, Marítimo released a statement saying they would refuse to negotiate the manager’s release clause. They were adamant that Matos wouldn’t leave until Swansea City activated his €1m clause.

The Swans wanted to pay €500k up front and remaining €500k in instalments. This didn’t please Marítimo, forcing the Welsh club to trigger his clause.

The club confirmed on their website that they couldn’t stop him from joining Swansea City after his clause was activated. Tuesday’s edition of Record covers the current situation at the Portuguese club after Matos left them for Swansea City.

Bernardo Ramos and Fernando Monteiro were Matos’ assistants in Portugal, and the duo are currently being tasked with taking care of training until a new permanent manager is announced.

It’s claimed Marítimo president Carlos André Gomes hasn’t managed to find a permanent successor for the new Swansea City manager amid claims otherwise.

Meanwhile, Marítimo midfielder Martín Tejón has shared his mixed feelings over Matos’ exit from the club.

“It was a somewhat sad and difficult week, but we continue working with one goal in mind. We will follow the same path as coach Vítor, who left an incredible team, both on and off the field,” he told Sport TV, relayed by Record.
