Ruben Sellés has had a mixed time at Real Zaragoza, and now it’s come to an end.

The 42-year-old was appointed Sheffield United manager in June, and didn’t make it until Autumn. Having been previously sacked by Hull City, he was given another chance in English football by the Blades.

Unfortunately, his time in charge of Sheffield United will go down in history for negative reasons. Sellés failed to pick up a point with the Blades and was out of a job by mid September.

In October he was fortunate to be given a chance by Real Zaragoza. Sellés wanted to use his experience in England to help the Spanish club, and said: “In the last three years, especially at clubs like Southampton, Reading, and Hull City, we’ve experienced situations similar to the one we’re currently experiencing at Real Zaragoza,” he said.

“And always with the ambition, in those slightly tougher moments, to be able to show that character. That know-how, staying calm, and, above all, trying to take it game by game. Day by day, improving our feelings. It’s an environment where, for various reasons, we’ve felt comfortable.”

How it’s all gone wrong in Spain

After a difficult start, and a lot of local doubt as people found out about his Sheffield United record, the manager started to turn things around.

However, that didn’t last for long and Ruben Sellés’ Real Zaragoza won just one of their last 12 matches under the Spaniard.

The club are currently bottom of LaLiga2 and fighting against relegation. The hope will be that Sellés’ departure will give them a bounce, with saving themselves still a realistic prospect.

Real Zaragoza keeping it quiet for now

Intriguingly, despite the manager’s exit being reported across the Spanish media, including by local newspaper El Periódico Aragón, they haven’t officially announced it yet.

The loss to Burgos on Saturday was the final straw, and the manager was later shown the door. The assumption would be that Real Zaragoza, aware their fans weren’t impressed with the appointment in the first place, and waiting to confirm a replacement before throwing their official announcement out there.
