All Portuguese newspapers today feature stories about Benfica and Wolverhampton Wanderers extending Gonçalo Guedes’ loan deal.
Most of them don’t bring big updates about this agreement, which was first reported on Monday evening, and only say the forward should stay in Lisbon for one more year.
It turns out that as Correio da Manhã covers the transfer, they say something about Wolves’ plans in the transfer window.
The outlet claims that club have the need to make €100m with sales this summer. For this reason, their initial intention was to sell Guedes on a permanent move.
However, Al Hilal showed up and are now in the process of signing Ruben Neves on a €55m deal. It’s said this money will ‘help alleviate pressure’ from Wolves at this time.
That means Neves’ expected departure will help Guedes’ situation, and Benfica are very glad about that, as all they’ll pay is part of the forward’s salaries during this loan spell.
The winger had been loaned to the Eagles in January, and due to knee injuries, wasn’t able to deliver much.
He’s still recovering from an injury and shouldn’t be ready for the start of the season.
