Álvaro Fernández came close to making his debut for Manchester United towards the end of last season, when Ralf Rangnick included him in the squad for the last four league ties. He remained as an unused substitute in those fixtures.
The 19-year-old was already down the pecking order at Old Trafford for a place on the left side of defence. The arrival of Tyrell Malacia in the summer window saw the Red Devils let him join Preston North End on a season-long loan deal.
Fernández has managed four assists from 10 matches in all competitions this season and has received praise from the local press. This has been relayed by AS, and towards the end, they give their own take on the defender.
The Spain U19 international will have a year left on his contract when he returns to Manchester United after the loan spell at Preston. That is when, as per the report, it will be ‘time to make decisions’ about the left-back.
At Old Trafford, AS state they ‘rub their hands and blind trust in Fernández is reaffirmed’. This would mean Erik ten Hag’s side have confidence in the young fullback, who has so far impressed at Preston.
Whether Manchester United’s ‘blind trust’ in Fernández will be converted into minutes on the pitch remains to be seen.
