Having already seen Micky van de Ven injured for a long while and Cristian Romero suspended, the last thing Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham needed was another setback in their defence.

Unfortunately, it was revealed that Destiny Udogie, who already missed the last game through suspension, was also injured, and was unable to feature for Italy in the current international break.

That will have caused some worry to Tottenham fans, but the player’s agent, Stefano Antonelli, tried to reassure everyone in an interview with TuttoMercatoWeb.

He made it clear that the first person to be annoyed by all of this was Luciano Spalletti, because the manager really enjoys what the Spurs defender has to offer.

However, Antonelli also revealed that this has been an ongoing issue for Udogie, which Tottenham need to sort out.

He said: “Unfortunately, in the match against Sheffield United at home, Destiny had a flexor problem. Tottenham did everything they could to get him back for the Chelsea game, which was also a poor match: he played 60 minutes before being sent off. Afterwards, it was deemed appropriate not to risk it as there would be been a risk of relapse.

“Destiny, until the last moment, tried to convince the Tottenham staff that the national team was something exceptional for him. He is a 20-year-old, who told me ‘we want to be part of history, to be part of this group in the run up of the Euros is to be part of history’.”

It seems Tottenham therefore pulled the plug on him going to represent his country, as they didn’t to want him to aggravate what is already a worrying issue.

They now have a couple of weeks to ensure it’s resolved, with the appropriate rest that comes with time off.
